Wheatley provincial park 7/05/26

I visited this area today to the east of P. Pelee. The park is on Lake Erie and has a number of creeks running through it, as well as extensive woodland.

I walked the shoreline with a feeding flock of Double-crested Cormorants offshore plus 10 Red-breasted Merganser. At the mouth of a creek there was a gathering of waders, Turnstone and Dunlin, plus a Great Blue Heron.

I returned by walking through the woods, which were deciduous with a generally sparse shrub layer, and wet in places. Several Warbling Vireos were initially seen, also Yellow-rumped Warbler and Northern Flicker. I heard a singing warbler above my head, a Black-throated Green no less, in actual fact two.

On reaching a wetter area in the middle of the wood I was delighted to find a Veery, a new bird for me, and which gave exceptional views. Shortly after this an Ovenbird appeared, though was in the undergrowth so not always easy to see.

Other warblers found were singles of Palm and Parula, plus two-three more Yellow-rumped.

A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak near the car completed a very satisfying day.
